New Sage 50 Payroll for the tax year 2012/2013

Are you aware that HMRC are introducing the RTI ( Real Time Information ) system in April 2013 with it becoming mandatory for all employers by October 2013? This means that employers will be required to submit details about PAYE and NIC and student loans every time they pay employees rather than with their year end sagepayrollreturn! Sage are already working closely with HMRC so you can be confident that all Sage's payroll solutions will be RTI ready.

From October 2012 employers must begin to provide a Qualifying Pension Scheme and opt all eligible employees in to it by making a minimum employers contribution. The reform will be phased in over 4 years, staring with larger companies first and completing he mandate by February 2017. To ensure its introduction is a simple as possible, the 2012-2013 version of Sage Payroll includes the ability to record details of the pension scheme provided. The software will record which employees have opted in/out, whether they have made a pension contribution themselves and when the new auto-enrollment review date is due.

The enhanced Salary Sacrifice feature of Sage Payroll enables you to set up and define salary deductions for childcare vouchers, cycle to work schemes etc.. Sage 50 Payroll will also automatically ensure that child care vouchers do not exceed the maximum tax relief they are entitled to.

Sage50 v2008 End Of Life

Check your version of Sage 50!!

May 2011 saw Sage announce that they are to apply their "End of Life" policy to Sage 50 v 2008 and Sage Instant v14. This will mean a gradual scaling down of their support for these products until eventual total withdrawal in April 2013.

Most software houses practice this philosophy of withdrawing support for older products and Sage is no exception. Sage invest heavily in research and development of their products so as to improve their customer experiences. This includes the necessity to take advantage of newer technologies and, of course, changes in legislation.

Using the latest technology with the latest software can only benefit business so improving their competitive edge.

Sophos Technical Alert
Important Advisory about Sophos Endpoint & Small Business products

We have discovered a problem that may be affecting security on a small number of computers running Sophos Anti-Virus or Sophos Endpoint Security and Control.  Although we have only had a small number of reports of this issue, we are advising all of our customers to perform certain checks as unfortunately the nature of this issue means that it is not reported in Sophos Enterprise Console or Sophos Control Centre.

Computers that might be affected:

  • Running 32bit versions of Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 only
  • Have had a malware or PUA detection (even if previously authorised) and a subsequent cleanup action between the 2nd and 10th of June 2011
  • Have not been restarted since June 10th.

If you have computers that meet ALL of the above criteria then the security may be compromised. Computers affected will show on access scanning is disabled in the Sophos Anti-Virus or Sophos Endpoint Security and Control client interface.

To recover the system you should read this endpoint advisory which includes a tool that can be used to identify potentially affected systems in the Sophos Enterprise Console and Sophos Control Centre along with a tool to detect and resolve the issue on a potentially affected computer without restarting it. If practical, simply restarting the computer will resolve the issue

Global Spam E-mail Levels Suddenly Fall

From BBC Technology News

"So if a campaign is not getting the returns they want, they can stop, regroup and try something else," he said.

Anti-spam campaigns have enjoyed recent success in making life difficult for spammers, said Mr Wood.

In late September 2010, a collective known as Spamit announced it was closing because of "numerous negative events" and increased attention.

That has certainly contributed to the current decline in spam volumes, said Vincent Hanna, an investigator at anti-spam group Spamhaus.

"This was a significant operation, with assets all over the world. It's decision to stop operating - or at least lay low for a while - has made it more difficult for [other] spammers," he said.

That helps explain the longer-term drop, but the reason for the reduction in December in not yet understood, he added.

There have, however, been signs that spammers are turning to alternative methods to e-mail for distributing their messages - such as Facebook and Twitter, said Mr Leonard.

In December, Twitter accounts were hijacked to distribute diet pill spam after a list of possible passwords was published online.

Even so, it is still too early to say the current lull in activity will last, said Mr Leonard.

"For years there have been predictions that e-mail spam is set to decline," said Mr Leonard. "But for as long the spammers can generate profit from their activities, it's not going away."

Mr Wood said new spammers usually pop up to replace inactive ones.

"We've yet to see any evidence that spam has become a bad business to be in," he added.
